Guide to Buying Heated Towel Rails

Heated towel rails are not luxury products, but they can be a crucial part of your bathroom. Which one is best for you? Before you make a purchase, read this guide.

A warm towel is a welcome addition to the bathroom. The heated towel rails of today are made to keep you and your bathroom warm, especially in winter.

There are many things to take into consideration when choosing the perfect towel heater.

Here are 6 things to keep in mind:

1. Heating element or central heating?

Before you purchase, you need to decide whether to hook the towel rail up to the central heating system. Or if you will use a heated element. The major difference between electrically heated and central heating towel rails is the fact that they can only be used during the heating system being on. This is usually in the winter. To warm towels during the summer, you'll need to turn on the entire system and close all valves except for the heated towel rail.

Tapron offers dual fuel electric elements that can be used to heat towel rails in warmer months. Using your central heating, you can also switch to electric heat or heat during winter.

No matter which option you choose, it is important that you hire a professional to install it, especially if the element is dual fuel electric.

2. Heat output and size

Consider the intended use before you decide on the size towel rail. Do you need a towel rail for your family bathroom? Are you looking for multiple towels to use with family members? Are you looking for a small bathroom? This could be the difference between buying a large towel rail or a small one.

The heat output of heated towel rails can be viewed under "Dimensions and Specifications", on each product page. If the towel rail is the only heat source and the towel rail provides sufficient heat, we recommend 400 BTUs per square metre for a bathroom that has one outside wall, one window, and good insulation.

You should expect to load your heated towel rail with many towels. These will absorb heat from the towel rail before it reaches your bedroom.

Tapron offers designer towel rails in a variety of sizes, from a small 270mm by 500mm to a large 1800mmx 600mm.

3. Installation location

Modern, well-insulated homes are less critical about the location of the heated towel rail, but the heated towel rail must be installed on the coldest wall in your bathroom. The best wall is usually the one with a window. If that is not possible, you can fix it on an external wall of the room. This will allow for consistent heat distribution throughout the room. It will also increase efficiency.

4. Colour/finish

There are many options for colours and finishes available, including classics like white or chrome. You can choose from an on-trend grey towel rail or a unique metallic finish such as brushed brass.

The efficiency of painted towel radiators is slightly higher than those made from chrome, as chrome plating acts as an insulator. However, it looks great. All chrome towel rails that we sell have been tested for salt to ensure the best resistance to corrosion and rust.

All our radiators and towel rails comply with BS EN 442 (the British Standard for Heating).

5. Are you looking for floor standing or wall mounting?

You can choose between a wall-mounted or floor-standing model depending on how much space you have. This is ideal for smaller bathrooms, where space is limited, such as in small bathrooms. You should ensure that the wall-mounted towel rail is suitable for your wall. It is a good idea to consult a professional if you have any questions.

6. Projection

You will need to consider the projection and make sure it doesn't become an obstruction. The projection will be further enhanced by the towels that are placed on top of the radiator, which can add 20-40mm depending on their thickness.

There are many styles of heated towel rails

There are many styles of heated towel bars that you can choose from depending on your personal preference and the space you have. Modern bathroom suites will be best served by a white-painted or chrome-plated design. A more traditional style is suitable if you want to maintain a classic look. You can choose a wall-mounted design if space is limited. You have the option of choosing!

Modern or traditional?

Heated towel rails are often thought to only be compatible with modern bathroom suites. Tapron stocks a variety of models that will suit traditional and contemporary bathrooms.

Contemporary

Contemporary towel rails look great in modern bathrooms and ensuites. Modern towel rails come with many rungs to hang towels. They are available in various finishes, including white, black, grey, and grey.

Traditional

A traditional-style heated towel rail is a good choice for older bathrooms or homes with period features. Some of these have been designed to resemble old-style radiators, with enamelled columns--complementing a more classical style bathroom.

Options for wall mounting

Wall-mounted towel rails are ideal for smaller bathrooms, where space is limited. Before you buy, make sure your wall can support the load.

Options for floor standing

A floor-standing towel rail is more practical than a standard towel rail and can be used in areas where a central heating connection is not available.

Heating elements

A 150-watt or 250-watt dual-fuel element kit allows a heated towel rail to be used on mains electricity and not as part of the central heating system. This is ideal for the summer months when central heating is turned off. To fit a heated element, it is important to have a professional check it and make sure that the heated towel rail you are purchasing is compatible.

Radiator valves

You can choose from a range of designer and functional radiator valves. All have a high-quality chrome finish. These valves will be required to be purchased separately in most cases. However, some products include valves.

Towels

After you have purchased your heated towel rail, you will need fluffy towels to hang it from! To create a flowy style in your bathroom, choose towels that match the accent colours or the overall scheme.
